What is a Mentor and who are iMentor?
A mentor is part guide, part teacher. At iMentor we have one mission: helping students write exceptional essays
to achieve superior results.
We help the learning process by freeing students from the strict rules of grammar, at least until they gain confidence. It is what makes us different and special.
iMentor was founded by Chris Wauton. He read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Christ Church, Oxford and later a Baccalaureate in Applied Linguistics at GSU university in the US.
He is familiar with university admissions procedures on both sides of the Atlantic as well as the business culture of London and New York.
What Is the Challenge and how can iMentor support?
Many Vietnamese students find it difficult to write with the clarity and purpose required by Western universities. This challenge stems from needing three different skills simultaneously:
- Critical Thinking to approach the question.
- Organisational Ability to answer coherently.
- Grammar and Vocabulary to express themselves clearly.
While schools often focus on grammar and vocabulary, they may spend less time developing critical thinking and organizational skills. These difficulties can create insecurity among students and concern among parents, further affecting progress. However, students who receive individual coaching typically regain their confidence and enthusiasm.

"Một chữ cũng là một trời, một câu cũng là một đường."
"One word is a sky, one sentence is a path."

Essay Writing Ability is the Gateway to Top Universities and to Thriving once there.
As with a bridge, an essay needs to know where it is going and to have the structural integrity to get there.
At iMentor, we help students to ‘build’ essays that will carry them on their path to success.

Essay writing is a challenge that even strong students difficult. We have created steps to support and simplify the process.
- Fact Finder. Identify the heart of the question (like a bird of prey) so that your work earns higher grades.
- Viewfinder. Organise your thoughts before setting out – a clear beginning, middle and end – so that you do not confuse yourself.
- Pathfinder. Write simple paragraphs from simple sentences so that the person reading the essay can follow more easily.
- Sanity Minder. Learn Time and Mind Management skills so that you remain calm and poised for success.

- Essay assignments become trickier, because they are doing not one job but two. They are quizzing you on your knowledge of the subject and your ability to write about it engagingly.
- The way to cope with this extra stress is to recognize that the process is like preparing a meal: that it all starts with good ingredients.
- We show you how to conduct your own research more fruitfully; how to gather the constituents and arrange them well. This elevates your work and also the grades.
Essays that are more Flavorful
Essays that are more Purposeful
- All too often, a student is given a writing task and proceeds without due attention.
- Common faults are to be indecisive (“some say this, others say that”) or merely repetitive.
- We show how to establish a clear point of view (Force Field Analysis) and to express it persuasively so it hits the mark.

- To be well received your work must demonstrate ‘Clarity of Thought’ and ‘Cogency of Argument.’
- As one Associate Professor puts it “You need to show the logic of what’s happening.”
- We teach a 3-Step technique (“Claim-Context-Counter Claim”) to promote good structure.
- Work that is well organized with good signposting earns better recognition, which raises hopes aloft.
Essays that are more Structured
Essays that are more Dynamic
- The time comes to stop ‘pondering’ and to begin writing.
- Most students find this moment stressful, so they delay. All too often, they leave it until the last moment, then rush to get it out of the way.
- We teach some Time Management as well as Mind Management. E.g. When writing, think like the director of an action movie.
- Examine the dynamics of the situation at hand. E.g. What forces (Hero) are pushing the situation forward or (Anti-Hero) are pushing back? In this way, you too can reach higher.
